Seawatch - Sunday, October 1st, 2017

Strong north winds that switch around to northeast and easterly later in the day provided an excellent flight for the first day of October.  Over 2000 Black Scoter and 100 Surf Scoter headed south today, as well as over 1000 Double-crested Cormorants.  The first Brant of the season flew by early in the morning, as well as seven Common Loons, the most of the season (so far).  Undoubtedly the highlight was the Great Shearwater that passed by just behind the jetty, spotted by naturalist Ben West, that quickly headed south and out-of-sight.

Tomorrow is forecasted to be northwest winds early and northeast winds by about noon , so it will no doubt be another excited and bird-filled day, especially in the afternoon!  Stop on by to see some scoter flocks heading south close to shore in the excellent afternoon light.
