Morning Flight, Tuesday & Wednesday, 10-11 October 2017

An exciting resurgence in migration numbers was brought on by a combination of significant weather factors. These were the centered around the interaction of a cold front and the residual but expansive tropical depression. Of the past two nights last night was really heavy with coastal bird movement. Drifting rain patterns existed throughout the night in the region and birds were coming in, en masse, heading east off of Delaware Bay, and west from the ocean to a much smaller extent, and swirling to the north as well. Yellow-rumped Warblers mixed with a later fall assortment of species dominated the movement.  Looking to the south, in the distance where this was mostly going on, groups warblers and others, and small whizzing battalions of Cedar Waxwing were going ashore, coming onboard the peninsula, and saying goodby to the sea. They must've all been relieved, but still under pressure to rest safely and find food amidst the passing showers. Even when the rain came down steadily and fast, the birds were still driving it home away from the water. It was a very humbling and fantastic sight to witness.
