Morning Flight, 19-22 September 2015

South, then east, then northeast winds have played their role for the past 4 days in Cape May.  Things slowed down over the weekend, but picked back up again yesterday and today.  Monday's flight was during the first day of northeast winds, with radar and listening for migrants at night indicating that the flight would be substantial.  A widely dispersed and mostly high-altitude movement occurred for 2.5 hours and the birding was fun and challenging.  A notable season-so-far high count of 6 Dickcissels and 396 warblers of 14 species was good to see.... and hear, and feel-- the cloudy conditions for the past two morning have made birding by silhouette and flight call the current practice.

Northeast winds are expected to be with us at least until Monday, October 1st.  Perhaps more hardy "neotropicals", like Blackpoll Warblers will pass by in numbers on a few more days this week.  I was glad to see many kind and interested visitors up at the dike these past four days and you've all helped add to the fun!  And also, Welcome Back from a busy schedule Louise Zemaitis and Michael O' Brien!  I have learned so much about Morning Flight and Cape May migrations from you.
