Avalon Seawatch, 5 October 2016

The day dawned with a  crisp chill to the air and a light breeze out of the north. The temperature remained around 65 degrees while the wind increased from 5 mph to 16 mph. Despite the clouds and haze, visibility was good throughout the day. The majority of the birds sighted today were seen 3-6 miles offshore. A steady flow of Double Crested Cormorants flew by totaling 7,129 individuals! There were also hefty numbers of Black Scoters (463), Surf Scoters (99), and Brown Pelicans (31). Overall 8,524 birds were counted today, bringing our season total up to 30,653 birds!

Many visitors came to the seawatch today and some were even lucky enough to see a humpback whale! Come join us at the seawatch, sunrise to sunset, at 8th and 9th street beach in Avalon!
