‘Twas another day with east winds this morning, but there were more birds moving than I expected there to be. That’s right, folks-- it’s finally September!!! You get to a certain point in the fall where the zugunruhe flows so strongly that not even a traditionally poor forecast can stifle migration entirely.
Overcast weather and east winds make for challenging viewing conditions by keeping birds backlit and high (respectively), but the perk of watching morning flight on a days like today is that you are forced to push the limits of your identification abilities to new levels.
While not particularly abundant, the morning had a few highlights: a Yellow-throated Warbler zipped north past the dike, a brief but intense pulse of Purple Martins pushed through later in the morning, and a couple of Dickcissels flew by.
As always, you can find the link to the official count on Trektellen here and the complete eBird checklist here. Photos from the day can be found below.
Bring on Day 32!
The aerialist capabilities of warblers are sorely under-rated. |
I could have a career as a Bigfoot researcher with photos like this. |
Spectacular kingbird swirling continues. |
What pleasure to have these gloriously fresh juvenile Semis keep me company! |
