Hawkwatch - Thursday, September 7, 2017

A good flight of Osprey and bounding Bobolinks took place today. Flurries of shorebirds raced by and three different species of buteos were observed (Broad-winged Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, and an early Red-shouldered Hawk). Each of the three falcon species were seen today; the Merlin and Peregrine Falcon were seen eating while on the go!

Naturalist Andrew Dreelin spotted a distant Wood Stork migrating by well to the north of the hawkwatch. This southern bird species is very rare to the area, and was an exciting addition to today’s push of migrating birds.

There were seemingly endless opportunities to study the spectacle of bird migration. Birds were seen both near and far. Come to the hawkwatch to soak up this exciting time!
