Morning Flight Tuesday October 19, 2010

There was a decent flight of Yellow-rumped Warblers and American Robins at the Higbee Dike this morning, but diversity overall was considerably lower than yesterday. We are still seeing double-digit numbers of Blackpoll Warblers nearly every day, but I expect that they will trail off to practically zero over the next week or so.
Though the finch flights have been noted throughout the region recently, they are really concentrated here at Cape May, and excellent numbers have been around over the last 4-5 days. These are mostly American Goldfinches with scattered Purple Finches and Pine Siskins, but there are also lots of House Finches moving through in large flocks of 40-50 birds. Cape May is often a great place to see these flights, but my sense is that it is a better than average finch fall, especially for Purple Finch and Pine Siskin (and maybe for House Finch too).
