Morning Flight Friday October 8, 2010

Great Scott! It was an incredible day at the Dike. Numbers of birds were extraordinary, with over 36,000 individuals were tallied by the end of the six hour count. Yellow-rumped Warblers accounted for the vast bulk of the flight, but there was still good diversity, and Northern Flickers, American Robins and Red-breasted Nuthatches put in good showings. A White-breasted Nuthatch and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo were cool flyouts as well. Accipiters were streaming north by the hundreds, and you couldn't look around without seeing one. Words can't really sum up the the flight, so here are some numbers (which also can't aptly describe it) in their stead:

Complete eBird list below, with birds engaged in Morning Flight behavior in bold. 36,655 individuals were counted.
