Hawk Watch Tuesday October 19, 2010

Well, today didn't quite come near the excitement of yesterday but it was still overall an enjoyable day up on the Platform. The raptor flight was spotty and inconsistent, but it featured some great views of low birds due to the low cloud ceiling that existed for most of the day, including adult Red-shouldered and Cooper's Hawks pretty close. Interestingly, Falcons were almost non-existent throughout.

Non-raptor wise there was a decent smattering of passerines, including numbers of Pine Siskins perching in front of the platform. Singles of Dickcissel and Clay-colored Sparrow each put in appearances around the Platform (the former being a different individual than the one yesterday, with the latter being the same bird that was there yesterday), and the count of juvenile White-crowned Sparrows is now up to 3.

A few Caspian Terns flying by were interesting, as was a Great Cormorant offshore in with a flock of Double-cresteds. The injured Whimbrel which had been hanging around the State Park since last week flew over to the NW and out of sight. It will be interesting to see whether or not this bird will return.
