Hawkwatch - Wednesday-Friday, November 1-3, 2017

November is finally here. It's time to bring on the late season raptors. The month is off to an unseaonably toasty-warm start of the month, which is causing the raptor migration to be a little slower than hoped for. We are still getting the raptors, they're just trickling through instead of rushing through. Raptors move through in waves, often influenced by the timing of cold fronts and the intensity of good (west/northwest) winds.

Yesterday we had crushing views of an American White Pelican which circled for several minutes north of the platform, then decided to rest on bunker pond for nearly half an hour. This pelican species is quite rare here, and is more commonly found migrating among the central flyaway and west-central prairies of North American. Such a treat to see up close!

Tomorrow's forecast is for cool temps along with light northeast winds. Fingers crossed for a good movement of raptors! See you at the hawkwatch.
