A couple of miserable looking Great Blue Herons were forced to put down in a most unusual place for waders (the beach at the 8th St. Jetty in Avalon)
The above photo says most of what needs to be said about how today went up at Avalon. While there were indeed some birds moving through most of the day, numbers really plummeted after the first couple of hours as the rain never really lightened up enough to allow for a good migration. Then again, even if there had been birds moving, many would have (and doubtless some did) gotten by beyond the fog due to the sub 1 mile visibility for most of the day.
Two separate groups of 5 Common Eiders landed right in front of the Seawatch and stayed until sunset. They were joined by almost 300 Black Scoters, whose calls could be heard constantly for the last couple of hours of "light."
