Hawk Watch Tuesday November 9, 2010

What a fantastic day at the Hawkwatch! From the solid morning flight of Passerines, to a good raptor movement, to rarities, to late species, today had it all. Northern Harriers once again highlighted the raptor movement, as they were streaming through all day, although we did see all 15 raptor species on the hawkwatch platform display board. Of the three Golden Eagles, two of them came close and one of those gave crippling over-the-platform views. Also in the department of awesome point-blank looks was a juvenile Northern Goshawk that hung around all day and nearly strafed the platform twice, much to the delight of all those on board.

The Lark Sparrow found yesterday afternoon continued through the day, and some people searching for it early on turned up an Ash-throated Flycatcher along the exit road. A cooperative Lapland Longspur put in an appearance late in the day, even perching atop a shrub along the Dune Trail at one point. Two Long-tailed Ducks on the Ocean were the first seen from the Platform this year, and a Bank Swallow was one of the most unexpected Passerines of the day. Today's Cave Swallow count was 22, and interesting single Shorebird flybys were White-rumped and Pectoral Sandpipers.
