Avalon Seawatch November 1, 2010

A really good day today at the seawatch: 38,444 migrants! A nice steady movement of birds throughout the day with big numbers of cormorants and scoters. Unfortunately, many of the birds were far away in the heat shimmer, although as the day wore on some did get closer.

There were quite a few highlights today. These included 3 Northern Shovelers, 4 Common Eiders, 37 White-winged Scoters, 5 Long-tailed Ducks, 20 Bufflehead and 3 Horned Grebes. A Merlin caught a Hermit Thrush over the water and carried it in right over our heads, and an Eastern Towhee landed on the jetty.
