Morning Flight - Tuesday, October 2, 2018

It was a relatively tranquil morning on the Higbee dike today. 103 American Robins, a few score Northern Flickers and Blue Jays, plus handfuls of warblers and a couple Purple Finches and Red-breasted Nuthatches comprised most all of the flight (all southbound).

Never gets old.
Blue Jays headed south against the blue Delaware Bay.
A Swainson’s Thrush that zoomed south past my feet was the highlight of the morning. Catharus thrushes in morning flight are quite a rare thing around here, almost always sticking to cover on the ground, so it was a real treat to see one actively migrating!

BirdCast predicts that Thursday night going into Friday will be a good night for migration, so make sure to get out and see some songbirds or better yet come visit!

As always, you can find our official count totals on Trektellen here, and our complete eBird checklist of the day’s observations here.

Bring on the next day!

With fresh dredge spoilage on top of the dike, gulls have replaced shorebirds as my faithful companions.
