16 September 2011 - Morning Flight

A brisk north wind was met at Higbee Beach by a nice songbird flight early this morning. The flight was highly compressed into the first hour after sunrise, and included >500 Cedar Waxwings and >1500 warblers, including at least 24 species of warbler. Though American Redstarts are still putting in a strong showing (350+), other species such as Northern Parula, Palm Warbler, and Blackpoll Warbler are catching up. In particular, the number of Blackpoll Warblers this morning (110) was high for this early in the season. Golden-winged Warbler, "Lawrence's" Warbler (Golden-winged x Blue-winged hybrid), and Connecticut Warblers (2) were the species highlights.
Tomorrow should be good as well - see you out there.
