A strong passerine flight passed the Higbee Dike this morning - many warblers flew out well to the east of the dike, which gave my "warbler sp." clicker a real workout, but there were also a number of great birds out in front and in good light (that is, to the west of the dike over the bayshore). About 500-600 warblers were highlighted by 1 Connecticut, a Pine, and a couple Bay-breasted Warblers. A Dickcissel and a point blank Summer Tanager added some excitement as well. The hawk flight at the dike was strong too, with over 150 Sharp-shinned Hawks tallied, all heading north along the bayshore.
In addition to the good morning flight, birding today around Cape May was really fun, especially in the evening when hundreds of small falcons were blasting through the dunes at Cape May Point. There is little in this world more thrilling than the little dark streak of a jack Merlin striking fear into the heart of an American Kestrel in perfect late afternoon light.
