Hawkwatch - October 29-30, 2018

West winds have brought many birds through the earlier part of this week. October has been a spectacular month of migration for raptors and more!

Sharp-shinned Hawks are one of the many stars of the October winds. These small accipiters move through in fast-flying lines and kettles. Their small size and fluttery flap-flap-glide motions give them a very meandering flight path. They are known for stout wings, a very compact head, and squared-off tail.

Another treat to the plethora of migrating raptors are Golden Eagles. This beautiful raptor is known for showing up in the latter portions of the fall season. We had four Golden Eagles migrate past the hawkwatch on Tuesday!
