Avalon Seawatch, 25 November 2016
The Avalon Seawatch was much slower today than our busy Thanksgiving day yesterday! The skies were cloudy and foggy, and the air was very still throughout the morning; maximum winds only reached 4 mph by the afternoon. There was a steady flight of red-throated loons throughout the day. The primary species observed today were black scoter, red-throated loon, and double-crested cormorant. Purple sandpipers and snow bunting also are still making a regular appearance along the jetties as well.
A notable moment from the day was observing a harbor seal! Harbor seals are summer residents off the coast of Maine, but they are commonly spotted off the coast of New Jersey throughout the cooler months from December to March. Did you know these pinnipeds can live up to 25 years?

Thanksgiving morning revealed over 10,000 birds by 8 AM. The visibility was perfectly clear with light winds coming from the south and temperatures rising to the low 50s. In the afternoon there was a short drizzle and a rainbow but that didn't stop the birds from flying south.
Today's count totaled in at over 38,000 birds! It marked the new season peak for Northern Gannets, Red Throated Loons, and Black Scoters. Our season total, of 63 days of counting, is just under 650,000 birds! Also of note, a Minke Whale was spotted less than a mile offshore!

Avalon Seawatch, 23 November 2016
The morning at Avalon boasted clear skies and steady bird
flight. Over 6,000 birds were
recorded before noon! The primary
species observed today were northern gannet, double-crested cormorant, and
red-throated loon, with about 2,000 individuals recorded of each species. A visit from a peregrine falcon, a nice
flight of bufflehead, and a friendly snow bunting made today a
pleasant day at the seawatch. A
notable moment from the day was observing a very large pod of nearly 40
dolphins hanging out around the bell buoy!
