Morning Flight, 16 August 2016

Hi, It's Glen Davis and I am very excited to be back as the primary counter for a third year with CMBO's Morning Flight Songbird Count.  I and the whole migration team are excited for another great season with, as always, some exciting new developments.

This year we moved to a new data collection platform called Trektellen (trektellen.org). Created by Gerard Troost, the Trektellen website and Android app from the Netherlands has been improving data entry and management for the sharing of migration count and banding (ringing) data since 2002.  This year all three of our fixed-point migration counts, the Morning Flight Songbird Count, Cape May Hawkwatch and Avalon Seawatch will all be using Trektellen to enter data in the field. That data will then be sent to the cloud, and downloaded to our servers where we will display it each morning in near-real-time. Once again this year, all three projects are generously sponsored by Swarovski Optik NA and an anonymous donor.

Let the count begin and start up the flight party!

August 16 is the current start date for the Morning Flight Songbird Count, but that doesn't mean fall migration magically starts then. Longer-distance, neotropical landbird migrants, like so many of the beloved flycatchers, vireos, orioles, warblers, tanagers and more, can be moving away from their breeding grounds in a variety of contexts starting in June, and we certainly have noticeable morning flights happening in July in Cape May every summer. The shorter-distance migration species are moving too, and we still have so much yet to learn!  A few have lauded at how one can find a bird migrating in some way, on every day of the year, in Cape May.

The Morning Flight Songbird Count is going to continue to investigate and shed light on this mysterious and fascinating topic!

Today was the first official day, but in the interest of breaking in the new technology, we actually ran a full test day yesterday, the 15th. Therefore the data is included below as well. You will also note that both northbound (top) and southbound (bottom) migrations were recorded. Historically only northbound (typical redirected "morning flight") data was recorded and reported. For comparison to historic data, then, the top portion of the table should be used. Since we can now easily record multiple directions throughout the morning, and because we are also interested in those birds that migrate south (especially on a morning like today when the winds were light southerly and birds were flying into them), we also present the southbound to you here. Notice that if you only looked at the northbound birds, you'd be missing the "big picture" today!

Enjoy...
